Accountability and Weight Loss
Jan 15, 2024When you set a goal, it involves you and only you. Achieving it is dependent on your hard work, consistency and perseverance. At the beginning you’re enthusiastic about setting goals and working towards the end result, but then sometimes the motivation tank runs low, causing you to slow down or even give up.
That’s why accountability is a powerful tool in your weigh loss journey! Holding yourself accountable can be the key to achieving your weight loss goals. Here are five steps you can take today to be more accountable to you and your goals.
1. Change your mindset. The mind/body connection will help you be mentally prepared to make the necessary changes. Visualize your goals and then visualize reaching your goals. Imagining your life in a state of good health can help you find the mindset for motivation. Be willing to forgive yourself if you feel like you’ve “slipped up” or “had a bad day.” Remember that one bad meal doesn’t destroy your entire plan, so get right back on track.
2. Make healthy living a priority. If you’re not used to working out or meal planning, carve out time and put it on your calendar. There are many apps you can use to track food, steps, exercise and more. Shop for fresh ingredients and minimally processed foods.
3. Track your progress. The scale is only one tool at your disposal, and although it’s important to track your weight, don’t let that be your only guide. Non-scale victories are equally as important. Things such as increased energy levels, better fitting clothes, improved sleep, easier movements, increased confidence and less pain and inflammation throughout the body are wins too!
4. Start small. Implement one or two healthy habits at a time. Instead of going to the gym every day, try going two to three times a week to start. Sit less and move more during the day. Add more protein and veggies to each meal. Small changes add up over time to create noticeable, significant progress. Plus once you form a habit that sticks, you’ll create accountability within yourself and keep the streak going.
5. Find a buddy or an accountability partner. Studies have shown that people who have weight loss partners are three times more likely to succeed and reach their weight loss goal. It also makes the experience more enjoyable, so go out and find your “crew” today. If you don’t like to work out, then you may find a class setting more enjoyable. You will often meet like-minded individuals there who will cheer you on when you feel like giving up.
